Trance has been nominated for an RPS Award in the chamber-scale composition category!
Commissioned by Trio Gaspard, Trance was written to sit alongside Haydn’s piano trios and is a meditative piece with a starring role for the cello (compensating for the instrument’s somewhat Cinderella role in most of Haydn’s trios). Sally’s relationship with Haydn’s F sharp minor trio goes back to her childhood, when she would overhear her mother, violinist Ursula Snow, practice it many times with her trio. Elements of Haydn are woven into Trance, rarely overtly yet always present.
RPS Chief Executive James Murphy says: ‘We often see classical music make news due to setbacks and funding cuts. Yet a resoundingly different story is being forged by musicians nationwide who – whatever they face – resiliently, creatively keep giving everything they have for the benefit of others. Communities recognise this, and they treasure it. This is the message we need more people to hear. Let’s all take pride in the story of Britain’s inspirational musicians, represented by this year’s shortlists. We warmly invite you to join us for an uplifting and exciting occasion celebrating what they do, at this year’s Royal Philharmonic Society Awards.’
The winners will be announced in a ceremony at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on 6 March.
